Dubai Opera is preparing to host the international musical “Phantom of the Opera,” which the house will host over a period of more than two weeks, from February 22 to March 10. It is the play that fans of fine arts in Dubai have been waiting for because of its wide fame and great success. It has been watched by more than 160 million people around the world, and was first presented in the West End theaters in London in 1986. It recently celebrated its 37th anniversary last October. 2023, and for the first time in its history, a new version will be presented with an Arabic face.
The play tells the story of the Phantom of the Opera, and is inspired by the classic novel “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux. The events of the story take place in Paris in the nineteenth century, and it tells the story of a musical genius known only as “The Phantom” who lives in the depths of the Opera House in Paris and haunts those inside it. sometimes. He is fascinated by the talents and beauty of the young soprano – Christine, who is attracted by the Phantom’s artistic genius to be his student and falls deeply in love with her. While the dramatic conflict begins when the ghost learns of Christine’s love for Raoul, exciting events follow, as the ghost’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events, where jealousy, madness, and emotions collide.
The play has won more than 70 major theatrical awards and has taken the world by storm with more than 13,900 performances on Broadway alone.
During the play’s team’s visit to Dubai a few days following their return from a trip to show the play in Riyadh, “Al Khaleej” met the star of the work, who plays the lead role in the character of “The Ghost” or “The Phantom,” and who is considered the first artist of Arab origin to embody this dazzling artistic character. Nadim Noman, the star of the show, told us regarding his feelings and his readiness to meet the Dubai audience, and said: “I consider myself lucky because I will perform the role that I dreamed of in the place where I belong in the Middle East. I combine Lebanese and British nationality. My father came from Lebanon to work in Dubai, where you know… To my mother, they got married and lived here for more than ten years of my childhood before they moved to live in London. This is why my relationship with Dubai is strong, and I have not stopped visiting it over the past years and witnessed the amazing amount of development that has spread in all areas during the past twenty years.
He adds: “I feel extremely happy and increasingly excited as I get closer to meeting the beloved Emirati audience, who is educated and connoisseur of the arts, by presenting this huge theatrical work, which I am very proud of being the first Arab artist to bear the responsibility of starring in since the start of his performances in the mid-eighties.”
Regarding his relationship with the Dubai Opera Theater, he says: “An exceptional theater and artistic and cultural platform. The amount of attention to detail in it is unparalleled in European theaters, starting with the choice of its distinctive location, the dazzling architectural design, the theater equipped with the highest capabilities, and the distribution of spectator seats close to the stage, which allows for good communication.” Between the artist and the audience and the ideal exploitation of spaces, and it has become the ambition of many artists in the world to visit it and present their arts on it, and this is not the first time I have stood on it, as I participated in the presentation of the play that we presented at Dubai Opera 4 years ago.”
The heroine of the show, Georgia Wilkinson, shares with us her feeling of meeting the Dubai Opera audience for the first time, and says: “I feel extremely happy to experience the performance on a dazzling theater like Dubai Opera, and to meet its audience, which is known for its artistic taste, especially following experiencing the experience of presenting the show in Riyadh, and I was very happy with the amount of interaction and admiration that it received.” The show won him over there, and then I was told, “You must prepare to receive the Dubai Opera audience who are fascinated by the fine arts.” And what makes me more happy to present this version of the show is that I play the role of “Christine,” the ghost’s lover, around whom the conflict revolves between him and her beloved, Raoul. I find that she is very similar to me in many ways. “I have a lively, innocent young personality, and the songs fit my voice perfectly. However, it requires a lot of practice before the show.”
