After encouraging signs in the opening holes, Tiger Woods struggled in his opening round of the PGA Championship and he posted a 74 card, four strokes over par.

Much like the Masters six weeks ago, Woods often had to save his pars with good approaches and when he reached the green, his birdie chances often rested on putts over 20 feet. . His game did not allow him to stay at the top of the rankings.

“I hit a lot of bad shots with my irons. As a result, I wasn’t able to misplace the ball near the hole for birdie chances, I always had long putts. I put myself in bad positions,” Woods commented following his round.

Woods hadn’t done badly on his first nine holes, however, posting a score of 35 for par. Woods started his day on the 10th hole, before attacking holes one through nine on the return.

The day started off on the right foot for Tiger. On his first shot of the day, Woods went there with a 325-yard bomb on his tee shot, before sending his approach just feet from the hole. He completed his birdie without difficulty.

Then, Woods went up a few holes later. On the par three of the 14e hole, Woods putt from 13 feet to record a second birdie and go two under par.

Tiger’s problems started on the next hole, when he made his first bogey of the tournament. A difficult pit exit left him with a long putt for par and he was unable to get the ball down the hole.

Woods finished his first half of the round with another bogey on the 18e hole, in particular because of another hazardous pit exit.

He followed up on his back nine with another bogey on the first hole, then another on the next hole, a fourth in six holes, to fall two strokes over par.

Tiger regained some confidence with a birdie on hole 3, but the celebrations were short-lived as he put on a bogey on the next hole.

He completed his round with bogeys on his last two holes of the day and posted a score of 39 on his back nine.

Woods was also the author of a disturbing scene on his 9th tee shot, his last of the day, when he appeared to have severe weakness in his right leg following contact with the ball.

“My leg has been in better condition before,” Woods smiled. She hurts a little. I’m going to start the process all over once more to be ready for tomorrow’s round. »

Woods explained that he will be receiving several treatments and will also be taking a few ice baths by the end of the day.

Woods was in the company of Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy on his band. Spieth struggled several times, on his way to a front nine of 37 and a final card of 72.

McIlroy had a near-perfect streak that opened his tournament four under par following nine holes. He finished the day five strokes under par.

The three playing partners will be back on the field Friday followingnoon, at 2:36 p.m., for the second round.
