The commune of Écaussinnes had eggs from seven henhouses located near the Total petrochemical zone located in Feluy analyzed. The results are worryingbecause of the seven henhouses analyzed, five contain PFAS levels higher than the future European standard of 100 mg/L (milligram/liter). These results are seven to nine times higher than the standard.
The municipality sent a letter to residents who live in certain streets of Marche-lez-Écaussinnes. The latter are invited not to consume eggs, as well as vegetables from their gardens. On the other hand, the municipality indicates that the analyzes at soil and well level used by market gardeners are very reassuring.
The next step is to identify the sources of pollution. According to Arnaud Guérard, the environmental alderman of Eccaussinnes, the most likely path would be that of petrochemical zoning. “Petrochemical zoning is being blamed, but the sources of contamination coming from water or air are not clearly identified. The results of another investigation should allow us to refine the recommendations sent to the population and, above all, this should allow us to identify these sources of contamination.”he explains.
Another investigation, led by the Walloon region this time, should make it possible to obtain other results on water, soil and eggs. Blood tests are also planned. While awaiting these results, the municipality will continue to apply the precautionary principle in the areas affected by this PFAS contamination.
