Peugeot 208: Best-Selling Car in Europe with New Upgrades and Electric Variant

In just over three years, almost a million vehicles were produced worldwide, and in the last two years it was the best-selling car in Europe, across all segments. Since its introduction at the end of 2019, things have been going uphill for the now ninth generation of the Peugeot 208. This also applies to the electric variant e-208, which was the best-selling electric vehicle in the B segment in Europe in 2022 and even the best-selling electric vehicle in France. The upcoming revision was carried out accordingly cautiously.

This initially included the usual retouching of the headlights and taillights, with the three vertical light claws in the bumper being pushed further outwards. The new light signature at the rear is also intended to suggest more width, although the red claws are now arranged horizontally. There are also several new light alloy rims, in 16 inch two-tone with diamond cut or in the same configuration in 17 inches, but then with inserts and a central lion emblem on the 4-spoke wheels. Additional paintwork in Agueda Yellow and Selenium Gray, glossy black exterior mirrors and brand lettering across the entire width of the trunk lid complete the external appearance. The dimensions remain unchanged at 4.05 meters long, 1.75 meters wide and 1.43 meters high, as does the modest trunk volume of 309 liters.

In the interior, the digital instrument cluster (in the Allure and GT versions) has a new design. The 10-inch touchscreen (previously 7 inches in the two entry-level versions) with swipe function is now standard in all equipment, which is used to control radio and telephone functions (Active) or the new generation of infotainment systems. In the Allure and GT versions, the central screen is equipped with HD technology, including the “Toggle Switches” buttons for quick access to the most important functions. There are also more USB ports, a more powerful smartphone charging pad with 15 watts (previously 5 watts) and a modern range of assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, emergency brake and collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, day and night , as well as active lane keeper with steering intervention.

However, the biggest changes took place in the drives. In the future, the Stromer variant will run with the new standard electric configuration from Stellantis, consisting of the more powerful 115 kW (156 hp) electric motor and a 54 kWh battery, which in this case has a range of up to 400 kilometers according to WLTP. Norm should be good. The small “e” became a capital “E” in the name. On the DC column, however, the maximum charging power remains at 100 kW, which means that Peugeot estimates the charging time from 20 to 80 percent to be 35 minutes. For AC charging, there is only a single-phase on-board charger with 7.4 kW as standard, which means that full charging on the wallbox takes 4.4 hours, as well as a three-phase charger with 11 kW charging power, which, however, costs an extra charge.

There are also two new 48-volt mild hybrid engines, consisting of a three-cylinder gasoline engine with 100 hp (74 kW) and 136 hp (100 kW) and an electric motor each, which is coupled to a new electrified six-speed dual clutch transmission. Pure combustion engines are also still on offer, in the form of the 1.2 liter three-cylinder petrol engine with 75 hp (55 kW) and five-speed manual transmission as well as the version tuned to 100 hp (74 kW) with stop-start system and 6 -Gear automatic.

Peugeot is not revealing prices yet because the new 208 is not scheduled to come onto the market until November 2023. However, the range of features has already been streamlined. In the future there will only be the three lines Active, Allure and GT. The entry-level version includes LED daytime running lights and taillights in a 3-claw design, air conditioning and the central 10-inch touchscreen. The middle version adds 16-inch alloy wheels, the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, 2 UBS-C sockets at the front, 1 USB-C socket and 1 USB-A socket at the rear. And the top version GT also comes with full LED headlights, HD reversing camera with 180 degree view of the surroundings, keyless entry and starting system and individually adjustable ambient lighting.
