The bustling aisles of Athy‘s beloved Supervalu transformed into a festive haven of community spirit on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, welcoming a record number of senior citizens for the store’s annual holiday celebration.
Now a thirty-year tradition, the event drew a vibrant crowd eager to partake in good cheer, delicious food, and heartwarming company. Tables laden with festive treats filled the space where grocery aisles once stood, creating an inviting atmosphere for conversation and laughter.
“We have it every year on the last Tuesday of November from around six to eight o’clock,” explained Pat Maher, Supervalu’s manager. “It’s the busiest one we have ever had. We cleared out one of the aisles and put in tables and chairs. There were cakes, sandwiches, tea and coffee and some music by Larry and Mary.”
Adding to the warmth of the occasion was Sláintecare Athy, who were present to promote their Healthy Communities initiative. They hosted a lively competition, awarding lucky winners, Carmel Whelan and Catherine Cahill, with generous food hampers.
