Petro in Spain

The president and his wife, Verónica Alcocer, opted for blue for the most elegant event of their state visit to Spain.

As he had announced hours before, the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, rebelled against the protocol of the monarchy and did not want to wear the traditional tailcoat that characterizes the clothing of those who attend the private dinners offered by the kings of Spain to their special guests.

Petro, who arrived in Madrid in the last few hours as part of a state visit, was present this Wednesday night at a dinner that took place at the Royal Palace of Madrid, whose hosts were King Felipe VI and Queen Leticia Ortiz.

The Colombian president attended dressed in a petrol blue tailored suit, a wine-red tie and black shoes. While the first lady, Verónica Alcocer, wore a long and sober dress, with a V-neckline, in a midnight blue tone, with overlapping sleeves and as long as the dress itself. Her accessories were very discreet.

However, Petro was honest: he explained that he has never worn a tailcoat and that he is not even comfortable wearing a tie.

“I don’t feel comfortable with the tie or the tailcoat. I have never worn a tailcoat”, explained the president in an interview with In Radio. For the president, the tailcoat “has a symbol, it has to do with elites, with anti-democracy, they are ideas that I have in my head.” For this reason, he will skip the protocol and attend the gala with a formal ‘pint’, but not with the traditional tailcoat.

At said dinner, the Colombian president also met with his counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, current president of the Government of Spain.

Experts analyze Gustavo Petro’s style in SEMANA

“The president wants to send a message of informality, but in a position of very high leadership, since he is the commander in chief of a nation, it is not the most appropriate. I doubt that he is advised on his image, nor do I think that he is interested in him, because he believes that fashion is not important, but he is wrong. He only puts on his cap, his jacket bomper and her moccasins, and throws herself into the ring,” says Pilar Castaño in WEEK.

And his analysis goes further: “I think it is not necessary to remind everyone, every day, that you were a guerrilla. If Petro dressed in a tie, it would not affect his image because his speech is very loud and clear. Following the dress code, especially in international events, would send a message of credibility; as yes, leaders of the left such as Pedro Sánchez, president of the Spanish Government, or at the time Felipe González have understood it”.

And he adds that “it is notorious that the president, with his way of dressing, wants to bring up his history, his rebellion, his anti-establishment.”

For fashion expert Beatriz Arango, the president continues to show the same style that had already been seen in campaign times.

“And when he appears in formal suits he doesn’t look comfortable. He loosens his tie, his shirt collar is not well on. Or on other occasions it is as if the garment were not his size, such as when his blazer falls off his shoulders, with which the garment immediately loses structure. Ideally, you should have garments made to your measure.”

Arango assures that he has not liked the recent appearances of the Colombian president “the use of the cap. Even indoors, because it is a very informal accessory, very street style”.
