Petro’s jabs scream

At 6:17 am the first Tik Tak sounds today, Monday September 5, in WEEK and sounds on the sides of what happened in Chile with the constitutional plebiscite.

The question is pertinent because precisely some very serious clashes that ended in fires and destruction had forced the reaction of a new constitutional text that would replace the current Chilean charter, which was that of Pinochet; and I say ‘was’ because in its long life it has had more than 60 modifications, but well, it continues to be identified as Pinochet’s constitution.

And how was it that 62% of Chileans rejected the “Approval”, as it is called, once morest just 38% who said yes? Three years lasted the process of building this new Constitution that would transform Chilean society and guarantee more rights than any other Constitution in the world, it was a Guinness record for rights.

From abortion to spirituality as an integral part of being human, from universal health to the obligation to respect the culinary tradition of Chileans. But those changes that would rebuild the most conservative country in Latin America in one of the most leftist societies, the majority of Chileans rejected it, decided that that was already going too far.

Both the right and the center-left made up the immense mass of voters who rejected the new constitutional text. Why? Because among the changes that most offended the majority of Chileans was the division of the country into a plurinationalism, that ended up granting regarding 20% of the so-called native peoples or indigenous peoples all kinds of rights in justice, in territory, in legislatures, as if they were independent nations; while the remaining 80% of Chileans were left subject to normal presidential power.

The level of humility with which President Boric accepted defeat, which was largely his own defeat as a political project, was striking. but today Boric promised that the country would start or will start working on a new project that receives the final support of 80% of Chileans, which the current Congress will have to start from scratch.

“The Chileans’ decision demands that our institutions and political leaders work harder, dialogue more, with more respect and affection to listen to the true voice of the people,” said Boric. For the Chilean president, his people do not want uncertainties to accentuate him. Good contrast with Colombia, at a time when we have nothing but uncertainties, we go from one uncertainty to another uncertainty.

That over there, Boric said, they want meeting dialogues and that this will allow Chile to come together effectively around the drafting of a new Constitution that it does like, period. He accepted defeat humbly, realistically and with respect.

Faced with such serenity from Boric, the intemperate trill of his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, shrieked, who believed that this defeat was to resurrect Pinochet or revive him. A true lack of respect for the vote of 8 million Chileans who do not want to revive Pinochet, who probably detest him in a good majority or a good proportion, but who democratically did not want to support a refoundational constitution of this nature.

It is that while there in Chile, humbly, a new constitutional work is going to be launched respecting the popular will, here the Minister of the Interior is already threatening Congress with demonstrations in the streets if it dares not to approve the tax reform. In other words, while democracy is in the air in Chile, here even Petro’s response to Pinochet smacks of totalitarianism.

Listen to the second Tik Tak of María Isabel Rueda today, Monday, September 5:

Tik Tak: Humberto de la Calle’s doubts regarding total peace

The former chief negotiator with the FARC is concerned regarding several things regarding “total peace.” The announcements of advance offers from the Government, the multilateral ceasefire without verification mechanisms, and the implementation of partial agreements with the ELN. Why this cluster of concerns for De la Calle? Listen to María Isabel Rueda.

At 6:31 am the second Tik Tak sounds today, Monday, September 5, in WEEK and sounds on the sides the nobility in the face of criticism and political adversity obliges, as Chilean President Boric demonstrated in the face of the resounding defeat of his constitutional plebisciteeven senator Iván Cepeda humbly accepts the criticism that the head of the negotiating team with the FARC in Havana, Humberto de la Calle, made yesterday in an interview with the newspaper Time regarding the total peace project.

He criticized the Government for making announcements of anticipated concessions. When the other side does not even have a working dialogue table, nor do they know what the issues will be, maybe as they say on the street, they end up throwing Total Peace because they are non-negotiable

Two, criticizes De la Calle that the partial agreements that are achieved be applied immediately. Because the risk is that the antagonists, well, take the partial offers, turn them into agreements, then put them in their pockets and bye fish, they step on each other. Quite usual thing with the ELN

Third, De la Calle criticizes the multilateral ceasefire offer, because it is a very complex decision and difficult to verify, and the key to an effective ceasefire is verification. Which from the outset greatly complicates the negotiations. To this are added the concerns of the mayors, now authorized to carry out humanitarian approaches in their regionit is. Which leaves them with many doubts, because they are tied to legal issues that prevent these approaches from becoming or resulting in peace agreements that commit the State, that is, in regional peace agreements.

But, at the same time, they cannot order specific police operations that make them intervene with the public force or withdraw from the spaces of these humanitarian approaches.. That places the mayors between immense ambiguities and risks of going over the line of their authorizations and powers.

In short, from De la Calle downwards, ‘total peace’, as it is proposed, He leaves concerns expressed that Senator Iván Cepeda, very active in the exploratory tables, especially with the ELN, accepts some as useful advice and others as differences that can be discussed.
