Petro: “We are trying to join forces to give Venezuela a political solution”

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed this Monday his concern about the political situation in Venezuela. Prior to his meeting with his counterparts from Brazil and Mexico, Petro told The Impulse who are trying to promote “a political solution to Venezuela.”

“We are trying to join the effort to give Venezuela a political and peaceful way out,” Petro told reporters, before meeting with Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva in Mexico City, where they are to attend to the inauguration of the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum.

President Lula Da Silva stated this Monday that he also expressed his concern about the situation and pointed out that a conversation must be “resumed” to resolve the political crisis and that Venezuela “return to democratic normality” after the presidential elections in July.

“I am very interested in Venezuela returning to democratic normality, it is a country with which I have a good relationship, it is a country that has a 1,600 kilometer border with Brazil (…) In other words, we need to find a way to resume a conversation democratic,” he said.

“I have been worried about Venezuela for a long time, not just now. Because the more peace Venezuela has, the more peace South America will have, because we want to consecrate South America as a zone of peace, we do not want war,” Lula added.
