Petro said there are “serious doubts” about the Venezuelan elections

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday that there are “serious doubts” about the presidential elections last Sunday in Venezuelawhich is why he asked the administration of Nicolás Maduro for a “transparent” scrutiny and to accept the result, “whatever it may be.”

«The serious doubts surrounding the Venezuelan electoral process could lead its people to a deep and violent polarization with serious consequences of permanent division of a nation that has known how to unite many times in its history“Petro said in a message on his X account, in his first demonstration on the Venezuelan elections.

«I invite the Venezuelan government to allow the elections to end in peace allowing a transparent scrutiny with vote counting, minutes and with oversight from all political forces in the country and professional international oversight,” Petro added.

He said that “while this process is taking place, peace can reach the opposing citizen forces and stop the violence that leads to death until the counting of votes is over and the elections are officially concluded.”

He proposed an agreement between the Maduro administration and the opposition

In view of this, He proposed “reaching an agreement between the government and the opposition” which allows for maximum respect for the force that lost the elections,” which “can be submitted as a Unilateral State Declaration to the United Nations Security Council.”

In writing, He also asked the US government to “suspend the blockades” and the decisions against Venezuelan citizens. The blockade is an inhumane measure that only brings more hunger and more violence than there already is and promotes the mass exodus of people.

He explained that “anything that happens in Venezuela will affect Colombia and vice versa. As the Venezuelan government has helped bring peace to Colombia, now this government that I represent wants to help bring peace to Venezuela.”

“The vote count is the end of every electoral process, it must be transparent and ensure peace and democracy,” he concluded.
