Petro reacts to the US position on Edmundo González

Colombian President Gustavo Petro reacted to the video in which State Department spokesman Matthew Miller appears, clarifying that the US still does not recognize Edmundo González as president of Venezuela.

The Colombian president, on his X account, took a stand in the midst of the conflict, urging the opposition and Nicolás Maduro to reach a political agreement, and warned that if they do not, “an exodus and war will break out throughout the Americas.”

“As neighbours and sister nations, Colombia and Venezuela are in an extremely vulnerable situation, and the first thing we have to defend is the people and peace.”Petro added.

In the same publication, Petro clarified that his government will not fall into a “war strategy” and “separation of peoples,” and emphasized that the path must be to seek the truth and achieve solutions that favor democracy based on it.

In his statement, Miller stressed that the US is not yet at the point of recognizing Edmundo Gonzalez as president. However, He clarified that the Biden Administration is in permanent contact with its partners in the region, with emphasis on Colombia, Brazil and Mexico.

“We recognize that it has been more than a week since the election and that any publication of those votes would require careful scrutiny given the possibility of manipulation.”he sentenced.
