Petro government will seek to boost lithium production in Colombia

After a meeting between Colombian businessmen who are part of the Aliadas alliance, José Antonio Ocampo, Gustavo Petro’s appointed Minister of Finance, assured that in the incoming government, transitional mining will not be touched and will seek to meet the needs of the internal market. first, in the first instance, promoting the production of minerals such as lithium, nickel and copper.

Precisely, this Monday the former Bolivian president Evo Morales proposed during a conference in Argentina that Latin American countries with lithium reserves directly control the exploitation of this natural resourcea decision that, in his opinion, would make them world “powers”.

“The West does not want us to add value to our natural resources. If we industrialize lithium in the hands of the people under the administration of the State, we can be powers in the world in something,” said the former president, citing the cases of Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.

In fact, recently the companies YPF Tecnología (Y-TEC) from Argentina and the National Strategic Public Company for Bolivian Lithium Deposits (YLB) signed a scientific-technological cooperation agreement to produce lithium cells and batteries.

According to the Colombian Mining Association, the discussion on climate change, the energy transition and the commitments that countries and companies in the world have established to achieve carbon neutrality have been put on the table discussion of the importance of minerals that are little talked regarding, such as cobalt, lithium and vanadiumas well as the opportunities associated with the growth in the demand for copper and nickel.

It should be noted that this mineral (lithium) is used for the construction of photovoltaic solar plants, wind farms, electric vehicles, smart meters, transmission lines, batteries, among others, so its potential is gigantic.
