Petro de Luanda completes the first round of the Girabola – Jornal OPaís

Petro de Luanda finished the first round of the Girabola, National Football Championship, undefeated, with 34 points, in a competition reduced in the number of participants, due to the disqualification of Isaac de Benguela.

This is the first time in history that the competition is played with an odd number of competitors, 15, requiring a team to rest for each round, following the Benguela team announced financial difficulties with the Angolan Football Federation (FAF).

Girabola 2023/2024 started on October 28, 2023 and during the 14 rounds the national champions recorded 10 wins, four draws and no defeats.

The Tricolors, who have 17 trophies in total, have already scored 24 goals and conceded just six in the first round of this 45th edition of the national event.

Compared to last season 2022/2023, Petro de Luanda also finished the first round in the lead, with 37 points, three more than in the current competition.

After commanding the competition for some period, Desportivo da Lunda-Sul conceded a 1-1 draw once morest Sagrada Esperança, at the weekend, in a match on the sixth round, dropping to second place, with 33 points.

The Lundas from the South overtook the main candidates for the title, namely 1º de Agosto, 5th/21 points.
