Colombian President Gustavo Petro described as “excellent” the announcement by his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, that he will resume dialogue with the United States government next Wednesday.
“Excellent. Above all, the dignity of the Venezuelan people,” Petro said on his X account.
Maduro announced on Monday, less than a month before the presidential elections on July 28 (28-J), in which he will seek re-election, that he agreed to resume talks with the United States following having received proposals for two months.
Explanation
“I have received a proposal from the United States government for two consecutive months to re-establish talks and direct dialogue. After thinking regarding it for two months, I have accepted. Next Wednesday, talks with the United States will restart,” the president said on his weekly television program.
Maduro hopes that in this new round of negotiations, the United States will “comply with the agreements signed in Qatar and reestablish the terms of dialogue with respect, without manipulation.”
The Venezuelan president said that the president of Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, will be the representative of Venezuela in this process, together with the governor of Miranda state, Héctor Rodríguez.
“We are going to debate and seek new agreements to ensure that what was signed in Qatar is fulfilled. I want dialogue, I want understanding, I want a future for our relations. I want changes, but under the absolute sovereignty and independence of Venezuela,” said Maduro.
