Petra Vlhova falls badly during the giant slalom in Jasna. A bitter setback for the Slovakian – also in the ball fight.
Local hero Petra Vlhova started the race in Jasna with start number 4 – but she didn’t make it to the finish. The Slovakian fell hard and had to be transported away following a long break. As she was being transported away, she was at least able to wave to the numerous fans before she covered her pained face once more.
It was an early mood dampener on our first stop in Slovakia in 3 years. The audience, who had of course hoped for a home win, also supported the other riders – but much less loudly and frenetically than before. It is currently unclear whether and how seriously Vlhova was injured.
As the Slovakian team later announced, the athlete was in stable condition and was taken to hospital for further examinations.
No duel with Shiffrin
The 28-year-old’s failure also has an impact on Sunday’s slalom. The big duel Mikaela Shiffrin – Petra Vlhova should have gone into the next round. Now it seems impossible for the Slovakian to start. This leaves the door open for Shiffrin to pull ahead in both the slalom rankings and the overall World Cup.
