400 signatures. A petition to authorize the wearing of convictional symbols (crosses, scarves, kippah, etc.) in the Anderlecht administration was launched by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee 1070 (CDI1070) this week. This petition is the result of several outings by Anderlecht councilors in the press following the creation of a work of reflection, carried out within the municipal administration in collaboration with Unia and intended to develop “a process of reflection and dialogue within the administration”, with a view to promoting “diversity and the fight once morest all forms of discrimination”, within the administration. “At the end of the process, concrete measures must be proposed and applied on a daily basis by agents in order to promote an inclusive administration, respectful of everyone and open to the diversity of its territory,” argued the municipality on its website.
Wearing the veil in Molenbeek puts the PS president under pressure
Among the measures proposed in this diversity plan established by a working group bringing together 37 members of the administration was the wearing of convictional symbols. This measure did not receive the support of the Anderlecht majority. Reason why CDI1070 is coming back with this petition. He will challenge elected officials during the municipal council meeting on November 30. “We do not understand this desire to postpone this measure once more until later when it is wanted by the agents of our municipality to improve their well-being and their enthusiasm at work,” comments CDI1070. Who cites Flemish municipalities such as Ghent, Antwerp or Mechelen as examples.
”Behind the argument of neutrality and the debate on religious signs, we are clearly targeting religious signs and in particular the headscarf worn by certain Muslim women. It is therefore high time to put an end to this stigma,” continues the citizen collective.
In Uccle, there is no question of a sign of conviction in the administration
For the record, Ecolo alderwoman Nadia Kammachi is in favor of accepting convictional signs within the Anderlecht administration. As did Mayor Fabrice Cumps (PS), who believed that “wearing the veil is becoming normal for most people”.
