Former Finnish-Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard strongly denied any inappropriate sexual behavior on Friday on the last day of his testimony at his rape trial, which is taking place in Toronto, Canada’s metropolis. The 82-year-old founder of Nygard International has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault and false imprisonment once morest four women and a 16-year-old girl in Toronto between 1988 and 2005.
“The kind of allegations that have been raised and described represent a kind of behavior that I have never had and will never have,” Peter Nygard said at the hearing when questioned by his lawyer Brian Greenspan. The latter asked him how he might reject so firmly the allegations that have been made once morest him by complainants in recent weeks.
On the witness stand, the designer denied several points raised by the complainants, including his participation in a Rolling Stones concert with one of them, his offer of morning-following pills to another following having raped her, and his phone call to another woman on a flight to schedule a meeting.
“Sexual attraction and assault”
“In those years, if I remember correctly, (phones on planes) practically didn’t exist. “We mightn’t even make calls,” said Peter Nygard, adding that he did not own a private jet in the late 1980s. The man with white hair tied in a bun also disputed the description of him as being “always in the company of young women.”
“That’s not true,” he retorted, citing as an example a former traveling companion who was, at the same time, six years older than him. Peter Nygard is accused of using his “power and status as a wealthy fashion designer to lure and sexually assault young women.”
Other charges of sexual assault weigh once morest him in Quebec and Manitoba, as well as extradition to the United States, where he was accused of raping dozens of women and girls, racketeering and trafficking. The main person concerned must undergo cross-examination on Monday as his trial enters its sixth week.
