The Austrian marathon record holder will tackle the classic 42.195 kilometers at the VCM on April 21st.

After a messed up year in 2023, Peter Herzog is starting once more this spring. The 2021 Olympian wants to start a new phase of success at the Vienna City Marathon on April 21st. “Vienna was my first big marathon stage. That’s why I want to go back and run a good marathon here,” says the 36-year-old from Pinzgau. He was repeatedly thrown back by injuries and illnesses. “My motivation is still the same. I don’t want to give up on myself yet. I haven’t forgotten how to run,” says the Union Salzburg athlete.

A new record or the direct Olympic limit (2:08:10 hours) is not the goal for Herzog in Vienna. “I will start with full ambition. If I get through with 2:13-2:15 and am healthy, then everything will be wonderful “It’s important to get back on track and train continuously without squeezing your body,” says trainer Hannes Langer’s protégé.

The last year and a half has been a constant ups and downs for Herzog with annoying injuries and illnesses. The goal of the 2024 Olympics in Paris became increasingly distant. In addition, as an army athlete, he unexpectedly had to disarm in the fall of 2023. Studying sports science at the University of Salzburg, which he began in the winter semester, helped him get back on track. He and his partner György are also happy regarding the upcoming birth of their second daughter.

“I’ve had good times and bad times. Why shouldn’t there be good times once more?” Herzog is confident regarding the coming races. Two weeks before the VCM, Herzog wants to test his form at the Berlin Half Marathon on April 7th. Ideally, this will put him in a good position for the European Half Marathon Championships in Rome in June.
