Peter Gabriel’s Epic Performance Delights Fans at the Bell Centre

It was a conquering Peter Gabriel who showed up in front of his fans gathered in all corners of the Bell Centre.

You had to be a die-hard fan to get on board with this somewhat eccentric show from the start. The sound system, muffled during the first bursts of the show, probably did not do justice to the performance.

Without fanfare, the 73-year-old rocker presented his musicians and we were able to see how popular his bassist Tony Levine was in Quebec.

From the outset, Gabriel was not content with the traditional “good evening Montreal” to delight the numerous French speakers on this Wednesday evening. Those who have followed him for a long time know how well he does in the language of Serge Fiori and Robert Lepage.

Between new products and sure values

As he never stopped questioning his art and the way it was performed, Peter Gabriel was not going to indulge in a series of old hits strung together in a predictable manner. He devoted a large part to his more recent compositions such as Panopticom, Four Kinds of Horses or i/o.

Perhaps to spare his voice, intact in its power, the British musician opted for a very gentle introduction with Washing of the Water et Growing Up.

Digging in the Dirt had a liberating effect on the crowd who were waiting for this kind of more striking chorus.

But the services of Playing for Time or Olive Tree did not lack bite, but perhaps a little energy in execution.

Just before the intermission, Gabriel sprayed us with a Sledgehammer which woke up some of the audience who really needed it. So much so that Gabriel let them sing each of SLEDGEHAMMER! in its place.

A second part in continuity but with more rhythm

Once once more, following the intermission, the singer chose the stripped-down arrangements to begin his singing turn. Fortunately, Road to Joy put a little rock back into the whole thing.

It should be noted that even if the theatrical aspect of Peter Gabriel’s performances is no longer in doubt, he is never the prisoner of too heavy a staging or an omnipresent visual.

On the contrary, he took the time to have fun in the second part with titles that were unanimously appreciated like Don’t Give Up (masterful vocal performance by Ayanna Witter)Red Rain and of course Big Timeexuding great contagious fun.

The classics Solsbury Hill, In your eyes et Biko came to electrify the last tremors of a rather quiet evening.
