British singer Peter Gabriel has released new music for the first time in seven years. The song “Panopticom” is the first single from the 72-year-old’s forthcoming album. After Gabriel has sung cover versions and rearranged versions of his own songs on his last two studio albums to date, “i/o” will be the first album in 20 years to feature new songs from the former Genesis frontman.
In addition to Gabriel’s longtime musical companions – guitarist David Rhodes, drummer Manu Katché and bassist Tony Levin – sound inventor Brian Eno also contributed to “Panopticom” with electronic synth sounds. The song is regarding “creating an infinitely expandable, accessible data globe,” Gabriel explained on his website. According to Gabriel, this so-called panopticon, which the investigative groups Bellingcat, Forensic Architecture and the human rights organization Witness, which Gabriel helped to found, is currently working on, should one day help to better understand the world.
It is still unclear when “i/o” will appear. However, the website announced that the phases of the moon will determine the timeline for future releases. “Panopticom” appeared on a full moon. Every time there is a full moon this year, another song is to be released.
In the summer, Peter Gabriel is going on a world tour with his new album. Concerts are planned in numerous European cities in May and June; there are no dates for Austria.
