Peter Fox collected ideas for a long time – lots of parties, jam sessions and studio nights provided good material. 15 years following his successful album “Stadtaffe” the Seeed singer now has eleven songs of his own once more. The dancefloors should soon be vibrating: on Friday (May 26) the second solo album of the 51-year-old, who will be making two guest appearances in Austria this year, will be released with “Love Songs”, some of which are extremely danceable.
The rumor mill has been churning for a long time: another Fox solo project? After the “Stadtaffe” hype, the musician already played farewell concerts as a single artist. After that he produced once more with Seeed, the band toured – and was celebrated. With “Zukunft Pink” the musical solo earthquake announced itself at the end of 2022. A slab of one song followed by two more strong singles.
So now “Love Songs”. Nobody should be fooled by the title. The beats of Fox, born Pierre Baigorry in Berlin, make heads shake, shoulders sway and hips sway almost continuously. Only with “Rain in Dubai” can Fox take a deep breath. A song regarding the essentially depressingly lonely world of influencers. The desert city is only a synonym for daily self-portrayal.
A portion of self-mockery rings through in “Celebration”, the description of a life between hype and hubris. “White Flags” marks a plea for disarmament in the small and large conflicts of everyday life. The deference of a partner as in “Tuff Cookie” (“when stressed, they want you on the team”) is desired by everyone. “Antidote” is a declaration of love to the power of love in the face of a life between “all people in tunnel mode”. The two songs also have extreme hit potential like “Schwarz zu Blau” from the first album.
On the subject of comparisons: With the mandolin-happy “Toscana Fanboys” Fox presents an anthem that is not inferior to “Haus am See” in terms of good vibes in the most pleasant atmosphere. Which would also talk regarding the features. Already with “Zukunft Pink” Fox made a direct hit with Etna singer Inéz Schaefer and also left her the strongest part of the refrain. The Hamburg singer-songwriter Benjamin Asare is part of “Celebration”. Fox has landed another real coup for “Toscana Fanboys”. Italo legend Adriano Celentano, now 85 years old, raps in the song regarding making love when it’s raining outside.
The lyrics regarding love (with lines like “no one has it like you”) and Zoff (“The anger is in the underground car park”), life (“tends to be overwhelmed”) and party (“always on the gas when partying”) were created together with David Conen of hip-hop team The Krauts – longtime musical collaborators with Fox. The very busy Kraftklub singer Felix Kummer also provided ideas.
With the album “Stadtaffe” Fox relied heavily on percussion and strings. The percussion elements were created by the co-founder of the Berlin drumline school “Bäm!” significantly strengthened. They are even more present, driving through the songs and the whole album, dictating the frequent changes in rhythm. In addition, there is a lot of rhythmic clapping, which underlines the party character of the album. The string passages that are so typical of Fox are also back, once more arranged by Gunter Papperitz. As a connecting element of the “Love Songs” there are always present choral passages.
Stylistically, Fox grabs a good 35 minutes in many colorful pots for good beats: Dancehall of course, lots of electronic club music and lots of Afrobeats with West and South African influences such as the Amapiano dance music style characterize the album.
Everything is framed by two of the already released songs. “Ein Auge blau” as an opener is still in the middle of the crises of everyday hits, “Zukunft Pink” as the real highlight of a strong album makes the bouncer full of optimism – always happy on the rocks too. Cooling down will also be necessary.
On June 18th, Peter Fox will be the headliner at the new festival Lido Sounds in Linz. He will also be appearing in the Vienna Open Air Arena on May 31st.
