In their 40 years of friendship, Peter Althof and boxing legend René Weller have experienced a lot, traveled a lot, stood in front of the camera together, laughed a lot. Even René Weller’s dementia didn’t change that. Peter Althof was at his side – almost until the end. “He didn’t want to eat or drink anymore and then you know that probably won’t last for long,” Peter Althof remembers the last days in an RTL interview two months following René Weller’s death.

It was hard to see his friend like that, but Peter Althof doesn’t want to be the kind of person who withdraws just because things get difficult. “That’s always the bad thing: when you’re sick, a lot of people abandon you and I didn’t want that,” he explains. Be patient, show understanding and be there, even when it may not be easy. That’s the least you can do for your friend, says Peter Althof.
