Pet Tag: a QR tag for your pet

Many pet owners — especially those capable of running away — have considered tagging their pets with a tracking chip like those offered by Apple (AirTag), Tile Mate or Samsung (Galaxy SmartTag+).

The Ring company, owned by Amazon, has taken a completely different path for its new Pet Tag product. Much simpler, the Ring Pet Tag essentially relies on a QR code instead of Bluetooth or GPS functionality.

The Pet Tag de Ring essentially involves putting a QR code on your dog or cat’s collar, which is linked to an app. If the unthinkable happens, someone can scan the QR code with their smartphone and help reunite the lost pet with its owner.

Recently launched, Ring offers — on pre-order — its Pet Tag at 9.99 US dollars on the American market to facilitate the return home of lost pets. It would not be surprising to later find these same Pet Tag on the Canadian megastore.

What does the QR code contain?

The QR code is linked to the pet’s profile, which can contain information such as its health status and, above all, an optional “contact me” function that allows two-way communication with the pet owner . While you could easily put a regular collar on your pet with your phone number on it, this QR code protects your number, zip code, or other personal information that people often place on pet collars.

All animal information

When a QR code is scanned, the owner receives a notification and the pet’s profile is shown to the person who found it. The pet’s profile can include up to five photos, its name, breed, weight and color. It may also contain unique markers, health information, medications and microchip numbers. Ring also partnered with the Petco Love Lost organization to integrate a network of more than 2,500 animal shelters across the United States into the Ring app.

The Ring Pet Tag, however, does not have tracking or wireless functions. It’s literally a QR code, so there’s no GPS or Amazon Sidewalk integration, and it has nothing to do with using an Apple AirTag on your pet. It also features a giant Ring logo, with the slogan “always at home”, turning your pet into a walking Ring advertisement.
