About 185,000 (184,960) animals abandoned or rescued following abuse live under the care of entities and groups of protectors in the country, including dogs (177,562 – 96%) and cats (7,398 – 4%). The information is part of a study carried out by the IPB (Instituto Pet Brasil) together with 400 NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) from all over Brazil.

In this scenario, initiatives such as OurPet, pet tech that works as a pet social network, are associated with AB Pet Tech (Brazilian Pet Tech Association). The technology and innovation company works with solutions for problems involving the pet sector.

Rafael Barioni, CEO and founder of OurPet and president of AB Pet Tech, says that the “animal app” offers free solutions in favor of the cause for NGOs, homes and shelters, in addition to promoting playful interaction between those “in love” with animals, such as “SOS Pet”, “Animal Friends” (conscious adoption) and “Virtual Fair” of animals available for adoption.

“Preventively, the application of SOS Pet tries to prevent an animal from being in a situation of vulnerability and absence of a home”, he explains. “And if, even so, an animal gets lost, the user can adopt abandoned pets through ‘Virtual Fairs’ or contribute financially to projects that aim to improve the living conditions of the pets”, he says.

Barioni says that OurPet encourages conscious adoptions through Animal Friends certification, avoiding impulsive attitudes, mistreatment and abandonment, in addition to allowing users to promote encounters between animals with similar behavior – like a relationship app.

Silvio Cabral Jr, CTO and Co-founder of OurPet explains how SOS Pet, Animal Friends (conscious adoption) and the Virtual Fair of animals available for adoption work in the following topics:

  • SoS Pet: the social network has an alert system for emergency cases involving abandoned or injured animals. “Through the tool, users can receive notifications regarding specific cases in their region and contribute financially to help in the recovery of pets in a critical situation”, explains Silvio Cabral Jr., CTO of the startup.
  • Animal Friends (conscious adoption): this is a certificate that the adopter – by guidance from entities, homes and shelters – attests that he has never been involved in a situation of abandonment and mistreatment of animals. “The certificate costs BRL 50 per adopter, an amount that is reverted to the certified entity. The feature is an alternative to raffles, requests for contributions on social networks and groups, and also combats impulse adoption”.
  • Virtual Fair: the solution increases the exposure of available animals, but does not replace the need for contact in which the pet adopts its human, says Barioni. “The proposal is to facilitate access to descriptions, photos and videos regarding animals that need a home – an option compared to face-to-face fairs that, in general, are held in the same places, with the same public.

Silvio Cabral Jr, also a partner at OurPet, draws attention to the National Adoption Day, celebrated on May 25, as a date to raise people’s awareness of the importance of this act. “It is a possibility for a child or adolescent to belong and live with a family that accepts them as a member. However, we also came to highlight another important type of adoption: that of animals ”, he concludes.

“Due to its functionalities, OurPet has become one of the main online platforms dedicated to the animal cause in Brazil, reaching even 10 of the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) of the UN (United Nations)”, he concludes. Barioni.
