Peskov: The Kremlin has not yet decided to create a federal district from the annexed regions

No decisions have yet been made on the creation of a new federal district from the regions annexed to Russia, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation. According to him, such decisions will be made “in a timely manner if necessary.”

“So far, no decisions have been made in this regard. Various options are being explored,” a Kremlin spokesman said during a press call, without giving any details.

In September 2022, referendums were held in the DPR and LPR, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine, on the issue of joining Russia. Local election commissions reported that the majority of participants in the plebiscite approved joining the Russian Federation. Vladimir Putin signed the relevant agreement on 30 September. Last week, the head of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov, said that the annexed regions might be united into one federal district.

It should be noted that following the annexation of Crimea to Russia, the republic and the city of Sevastopol formed the Crimean Federal District. On July 28, 2016, it was abolished, and the peninsula became part of the Southern Federal District.
