Peshawar: Student built solar and battery powered vehicle ‘Thunder’

Peshawar of Engineering University student Qaim Hasan has developed a vehicle powered by both solar panels and batteries, which he has named ‘Thunder’.

This Jeep is the first vehicle of its kind that can travel up to 60 km on a single charge and has a carrying capacity of up to 400 kg. If there is no sun and the charge is exhausted, there is an option to drive the vehicle on petrol.

Speaking to Independent Urdu, Qaim Hasan told about his intention before building this vehicle that ‘I have done mechanical engineering from Engineering University Peshawar. After completing engineering you get a final project in which you can build anything.’

“I asked my supervisor to make this car, so he said, make a unique car, not a simple one, if there is something new in the market, everyone has this normal car.”

Qaim Hasan says that he had to face a lot of complications in the beginning in making this vehicle. Qaim said that this chassis was being designed for the first time in Pakistan. The whole vehicle had to be built from scratch and time was very short.’

The main feature of this vehicle is the 200 cc engine with 2.2 kW electric motor and solar charging option. On one charge you will get a range of 60 km without solar on electric which is charged in three units.

Above 60 km it will automatically start the engine.

The engine will give you a range of 35 to 40 km. When you start the engine, not only will you drive home empty, it will also charge the battery pack after the engine is started. Means, if you go home, your battery will also be recharged. It is an environment-friendly vehicle.’

Adnan Rasheed, a lecturer in the Mechanical Department of Peshawar University, says that these students have worked very hard in making the Thunder Jeep and with six months of effort and hard work, they have made a solar panel and battery powered hybrid vehicle which is Pakistan’s first vehicle. ‘

According to engineer Adnan Rasheed, ‘If such children are supported, they can make good things out of it and improve it. He has done all this work on his own, where if he needed guidance, we would have discussed it. The students have done the analysis and these are all the calculations on which the students gave their presentations here where the professors and teachers were present.

“I am happy that our children can go far if the government encourages these students to do better,” he said.
