Hundreds of people formed long queues outside the headquarters of the Peruvian Ministry of Culture on Thursday to bid farewell to the former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), who died last Wednesday at the age of 86 and is considered “the best president” in the history of his country.
“Chino, present,” chanted some of the citizens, in memory of the nickname by which the politician of Japanese origin was known, who came from different districts of Lima and other provinces of the country to attend the wake of the former president.
Most of the citizens carried photographs of Fujimori during his presidential term, on which one could read “thank you for the peace you gave to Peru”, as well as Peruvian flags.
“You will always live in our hearts, in the hearts of the majority of the Peruvian people,” they chanted.
Outside the ministry headquarters, numerous floral arrangements containing condolences from the senders, several of whom were legislators and former legislators of Fujimorism, were piled up.
“He is in our hearts and will never die, because he will always leave his works that are there, deeds and not words,” Alicia told EFE.
Vilma Barboza, another citizen who came to the wake, said that she did so to “say goodbye to the best president” of her country “in all her life.”
Adelaida García told EFE that she decided to travel from the northern city of Tumbes, on the border with Ecuador, because her husband was the first mayor of the Fujimorist government and she is “very hurt” by his death.
The woman stressed that, “although people are divided, with errors and everything,” Fujimori “has been the best president of Peru.”
The political leader has lost the general elections in her country on three consecutive occasions, in 2011, 2016 and 2021, against Ollanta Humala, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski and Pedro Castillo, respectively.
This Thursday, The coffin with his body was taken to the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture for a wake that will last until next Saturday.when he will be buried in a private cemetery in Lima.
Fujimori received state honours, as required by his country’s ceremonial system, when his remains arrived at the wake at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture.
