Peru on Monday thanked Brazil for its “invaluable support” after the South American giant assumed diplomatic and consular representation of the Andean country in Venezuela, following the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry reported.

“The Brazilian government will assume the protection of Peru’s interests in Venezuela, as well as consular cooperation for Peruvian citizens in that country; along with the custody of Peruvian diplomatic premises, assets and archives,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

He explained that this decision was taken in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic and Consular Relations.

“This diplomatic and consular representation by Brazil is a result of the acceptance of the Government of Venezuela, as reported in an official statement released today, and in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned conventions,” the information released added.

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by expressing its gratitude to the Government of Brazil “for this invaluable support, which reflects the excellent state” of their “bilateral relations that are based on historic and solid ties of friendship, cooperation and integration.”

Since the elections held in Venezuela on Sunday, July 28, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) gave victory to the current president Nicolás Maduro, Peru has led a response from countries in the region to the “fraud” that it believes has been committed in the elections.

Peru’s statements on the results and its recognition of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as president-elect led to the breaking off of diplomatic relations announced by Venezuela and the expulsion of the Venezuelan diplomatic corps in Peru and the Peruvian diplomatic corps in the Caribbean country.

In this regard, Peruvian Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzén said on August 1 that the Executive would ask “a friendly republic” to take charge of consular duties in Venezuela, and that the same will occur in Peru, meaning that Venezuela will turn to “a friendly country” to take charge of representation duties.

“This is not the first time that a situation like this has happened and countries have mechanisms to prevent their compatriots on both sides of the country from being left helpless,” he said, adding that in the next few days they will give the good news that there is “a sister republic” that will assist compatriots in Venezuela and the same with Venezuelans in the Andean country.
