The Peruvian government has recognized opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela’s president-elect following Sunday’s election, in which the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared victory to current President Nicolás Maduro, Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea said on Tuesday.

“This position is shared by many countries, governments and international organizations,” the Peruvian foreign minister told state-run TV Peru.

Asked how they view Maduro, he said that “after the fraud committed” in Sunday’s elections, Peru considers him “as a person who wants to perpetuate himself in power through a dictatorship.”

The foreign minister explained that he sent “a message to the telephone” of opposition leader María Corina Machado, expressing his solidarity with her and González Urrutia.

The CNE announced that Maduro won by just over 704,114 votes over González Urrutia, the candidate of the majority opposition coalition, when 20% of the votes were still pending, which translates into 2,394,268 votes, the fate of which is unknown and which could change the final results.

The main opposition coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), claimed that González Urrutia won the presidency by a wide margin and created a website where it uploaded 73% of the electoral records to reinforce its claim.
