Peru announced on Tuesday a curfew in the southern region of Puno in an effort to quell violent protests, a day following 18 people were killed in clashes between demonstrators and security forces.

Prime Minister Alberto Otarola said the curfew applies at night for three days and starts from 8:00 pm to 4:00 am local time (01:00 to 09:00 GMT).
It comes following the death toll from the month-long protests once morest the ouster of former President Pedro Castillo rose to 40, including 18 killed on Monday night.
The Puno region, which borders Bolivia and is home to many indigenous Aymara people, has become the center of the protest movement led by Castillo’s supporters. During the night, protesters looted shops and attacked police vehicles in the area.
