Peru Earthquake: Latest Updates, Impact, and Safety Measures

The earthquake occurred at 5:17 pm (local time) at a depth of 31 kilometers, according to the report from the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) shared on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The epicenter was 69 kilometers from the municipality of San Vicente de Cañete, in the south of the department of Lima, and had intensity IV on the Mercalli scale, which places it within the moderate parameters.

Earthquakes of that intensity are noticeable to most people inside buildings, although by few people outside during the day.

During the night some people may wake up and a disturbance occurs in ceramics, doors and windows. The walls used to make noise.

Given the tremor, the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) recalled the importance of citizens locating themselves in a safe area, staying calm and having an emergency backpack ready.

For its part, the Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation of the Peruvian Navy clarified that the earthquake has not generated a tsunami alert on the country’s coastline.

Peru is located in the area called the Pacific Ring of Fire, where approximately 85% of global seismic activity is recorded.
