Peruvian authorities have begun to require a valid passport and visa for all Venezuelan citizens seeking to enter the country, the National Superintendency of Migration confirmed.
The agency stated in a statement that, “from today, the entry requirements to Peru are standardized for all persons of Venezuelan nationality,” in compliance with an official resolution published on June 27, which eliminated some exceptions that had been applied until now.
Migration said that the updated requirements also “mitigate the risks associated with the control of documents that do not have the security measures of passports and visas.”
The new provisions indicate that Venezuelans who have a visa in an expired passport will be required to present a travel document valid for at least six months before entering the national territory.
A posibility
As a temporary measure, Venezuelans with expired passports will be allowed, for one time only, to request a change of immigration status, provided that they entered the country before the latest resolution came into effect and meet the other requirements and conditions indicated in each procedure.
“The Superintendency urges all foreign citizens to comply with the requirements of current regulations in order to enter the country or they will be declared inadmissible and re-embarked,” he stressed.
He also noted that airlines are required by law to verify passenger information before they board flights and warned that “failure to do so might result in penalties.”
The resolution published last week by the Immigration Superintendency repealed another rule issued on June 12, 2019 that allowed Venezuelans to enter Peru with an expired passport or birth certificate for children under nine years of age.
Authorities
Executive authorities say that the relaxation of immigration requirements generated several waves of Venezuelan arrivals to the country and also increased a problem of citizen security due to the emergence of criminal organizations led by people of that nationality.
So far this year, there have been only 16 entries of Venezuelans into Peru due to being in a vulnerable situation, the law indicated when justifying the suspension of the 2019 resolution that facilitated entries with humanitarian visas and expired passports.
Local media reported that the first day of the total visa and passport requirement took place without major incidents at the border crossings in the north, bordering Ecuador, and in the south, bordering Chile, where authorities stepped up police and immigration control and surveillance.
