A personalized license plate is a plate whose inscription is chosen by the holder himself. You can choose the name of a loved one, your business or your favorite music group. In our country you can apply for a license plate for different types of vehicles, such as a passenger car, a motorcycle, a trailer and a classic car put into service more than 25 years ago. In Belgium, this type of license plate is extremely popular. Two municipalities share first place in terms of number of requests: one in Flanders, the other in Wallonia. In Flanders, it is unsurprisingly in Knokke that you are most likely to see cars with personalized number plates, while in Wallonia, it is in Lasne, in Walloon Brabant.

What are the rules?
A personalized registration plate must begin with the embossed stamp of the DIV, the Directorate for Vehicle Registration. Then there is room for eight characters. Your choice cannot be limited to numbers, but must also contain at least one letter. Letters are separated from numbers by a hyphen, which is also considered a character. In addition, there are a number of other rules regarding the use of certain numbers to avoid confusion with normal number plates. There is also a blacklist of prohibited combinations.
