The weeks follow one another and are similar in Quiévrain where train line 96 faces numerous train cancellations or, at best, delays of very long minutes. A situation which concerns commuters but also local elected officials. The deputy mayor of Hensies, Eric Thiébaut (PS), even wonders if this contempt for the commuters of line 96 is not voluntary on the part of the SNCB. He will question the federal minister of mobility soon in order to obtain explanations and, above all, to try to change this situation which has lasted for many years.
”Recurring delays, canceled trains, a lack of seats during peak hours or even the presence of old, uncomfortable cars, the hiccups are multiplying once more on line 96 Quiévrain-Mons-Brussels. In recent weeks, trains have broken down several times in the middle of the fields,” regrets Eric Thiébaut. “Since the start of the school year, I have been stopped every day by commuters who express their anger and distress.”
Setbacks already denounced by the deputy mayor to the Federal Minister of Mobility. A glimmer of hope seemed to exist following the announcement of a budget of 55 million euros which would be invested on lines 96 and 97 for the period 2022-2024. Unfortunately, it is clear that the situation is still not improving.
”Commuters who take the train to Boussu, Hainin, Thulin and Quiévrain are often stuck at Saint-Ghislain station following the outright cancellation of trains at the end of the day. They must therefore quickly find alternative solutions to return home. Today, I find myself wondering if the SNCB is not deliberately allowing the connection between Quiévrain and Saint-Ghislain to deteriorate,” continues Eric Thiébaut.
Faced with the inaction of the SNCB and the minister, Eric Thiébaut will once more call on the latter in the Federal Parliament to obtain explanations.
