Persistent Social Unrest Surrounding Delhaize Supermarket Chain: Find Out the Latest Updates and Controversies

2023-09-13 17:51:00

The information was confirmed on Wednesday by Roel Dekelver, spokesperson for the supermarket chain. The new operator filed a complaint with the police. “We take this very seriously, it is unacceptable,” Mr Dekelver said.

Delhaize announced a few months ago that it wanted to sell all of its 128 owned supermarkets, a decision which has since caused persistent social unrest.

In August, the first fifteen stores found a new operator and at the beginning of September, the supermarket chain announced that an independent buyer had been found for 17 additional supermarkets.

One of the stores for which a buyer has been found is the Delhaize supermarket in Flagey, Ixelles. In April, motor oil had already been poured at the entrance to the store, but during the night from Monday to Tuesday, vandals chose the private residence of one of the new operators as their target.

“Paint was projected on the facade and a threatening message was left: ‘Take down Delhaize and its pawns’,” explains Roel Dekelver. “Let me be clear, we strongly condemn this, it is unacceptable. We hope that other parties involved in this story will also condemn these actions. This is pure intimidation that has nothing but a polarizing effect.”
