Persistent rumors: a big surprise for the next iPhone 15?

Apple, which is due to announce the release of the iPhone 15 on September 12, will most likely have a big surprise in store for users.

Rumors claim that the iPhone 15 would no longer have a “lightning” type charger but rather a universal USB-C charger.

The change would come less than a year after the European Union (EU) voted in favor of legislation requiring smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, portable speakers and other small devices to support charging USB-C by 2024.

This first-of-its-kind law aims to reduce the number of chargers and cables consumers have to deal with when purchasing a new device, and allow them to mix and match devices and chargers from different brands

“This is arguably the biggest change in iPhone design in several years, but in reality it’s not a dramatic decision,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight.

It wasn’t that long ago that Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing continued to tout the Lightning charger, designed to quickly charge Apple devices. However, he admitted last year that the company would have to adapt to new European regulations, reports CNN.

The European Union’s decision is part of a larger effort to comprehensively combat electronic waste.

It’s unclear whether the move to USB-C will happen for all new iPhone 15 models or just Pro devices. This major change could attract new consumers to purchase an iPhone 15, according to Thomas Husson, vice president of Forrester Research.

iPhone 15 devices are expected to come with a new cable in the box.

“In the long term this is likely to benefit them, with a universal charging system having very obvious benefits,” added Ben Wood, analyst at CCS Insight.

Apple could also bypass wired charging altogether to make way for wireless charging, but not right away. At the moment, wireless charging is much slower than wired charging. We will still have to wait, experts believe.

Apple introduced the Lightning charger with the iPhone 5 in 2012. This forced consumers to purchase a $30 Lightning adapter to connect their device to older docks, alarm clocks and speaker systems.

According to a report from Digitimes, the prices of the iPhone 15 Pro will increase significantly due to upgrades to the device’s chassis made of titanium stainless steel, but the upgrade of the periscope lens, which concerns only the Pro Max, and which allows an optical zoom of 5-6x.

So, the suggested price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max could increase by $200, becoming the most expensive iPhone ever released.

Here are the retail prices in US dollars as reported by Forbes.

– iPhone 15: prices starting at $799 (unchanged)

– iPhone 15 Plus: price starting at 899 (unchanged)

– iPhone 15 Pro: prices starting at $1,099 (increase of $100) $1497 CAD

– iPhone 15 Pro Max: price starting at $1299 (increase of $200) $1770 CAD
