Perros-Guirec. The meteor disintegrates: a flash in the night in Trestraou

A point of light that grows, a luminosity like the full moon and finally an impressive flash: Monday, February 13, this is the spectacle captured by the Vision-Environment webcam installed facing the beach Trestraou, in Perros-Guirec. But also that of Trévou-Tréguignec.

Entering the atmosphere at a speed of 14 km/second around 4 a.m., this asteroid dubbed 2023 CX1 by the Minor Planet Center thus delivered its swan song: he disintegrated and turned into a shooting star.

About 1 meter in diameter

The fireball occurred at the scheduled time and location (02:59 UTC), with sightings mainly from the south of the UK and France, but also from Belgium, the Netherlands and even Germany.

Spectacular, for a meteor which was barely about 1 meter in diameter before entering the atmosphere, straight from the main asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter, according to astronomers.

An impact which this time had been announced thanks to progress in detection.
