Perrine Delacour took the lead in the Portland tournament with a superb 63 despite the heavy rain. Brooke Henderson sits six shots behind following finishing the first round with a minus-3 record.
Winless on the LPGA Tour, Delacour started with a birdie and birdied five straight on holes 3 through 7. She turned in a 30 on her front nine. The 29-year-old Frenchwoman also added a sub-par shot on holes 14,15 and 17 and did not suffer a single bogey.
Gina Kim grabbed second place with a 64. She too didn’t commit a single bogey.
On Henderson’s side, the Canadian had five birdies, but was also the victim of two bogeys. She finished 13th at the Canadian Open, which concluded on Sunday.
Defending champion Andrea Lee turned in a 66 and is tied for sixth with Megan Khang, Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Sarah Kemp and Pavarisa Yoktuan.
Delacour played 30 on the front nine and was bogey-free on the day.
Kim is one stroke behind; she too is looking for a first win. The one who played with Duke in the NCAA has missed qualifying in her last five tournaments.
“It’s exciting when we see that all our efforts lead to something,” said the 23-year-old golfer. The season was difficult, but I didn’t give up. I kept hoping to get a good score like that. »
Nelly Korda, Linn Grant and Olivia Cowan brought in 65 cards. Bored in the lower back in the spring, Korda has returned to form heading into the Solheim Cup in Spain at the end of September.
