Smoking rooms will be permanently banned from the Horeca sector from 2026. This new measure, decided by the federal government in its interfederal plan once morest tobacco consumption, also threatens the survival of the shisha bar sector.

Last December, the federal government and the federated entities agreed on an interfederal plan once morest tobacco consumption which, although in decline in Belgium, is still the cause of many deaths each year. This plan will be voted on in Parliament in the coming weeks. Among the strong measures contained in this agreement: the end of smoking rooms in the Horeca from 2026.

“A frank evolution”, analyzes the expert in tobacco prevention at the Suzanne Gabriel Cancer Foundation in the columns of La DH, even if she believes that we can always go further in the fight once morest tobacco.

What regarding the shisha sector?

This new measure, on the other hand, casts a blur on the future of the shisha sector, framed by the same rules as the classic bars for smoking rooms. In Brussels, 200 establishments are already mobilizing to ensure their survival. “Since we are framed by an unsuitable law, we are automatically in violation”, explains an owner to our colleagues from La DH.
