The legal advisor of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Perkins Rocha, was charged this Thursday, August 29, with the alleged crimes of terrorism, treason, conspiracy, criminal association and incitement to hatred.

The information was released by his wife, Constanza Cipriani, and she explained that during the presentation hearing, which took place in the early morning, he was denied the right to a private defense. She also indicated that the lawyer will be held in El Helicoide, in Caracas.

My husband is in prison for dissenting, for expressing his opinion and for fighting for the truth to be known, for wanting a country where we all fit in and where we can live according to our efforts,” she wrote on her X account.

Perkins Rocha was arrested on August 27, according to what opposition leader María Corina Machado reported at the time.

“The Nicolás Maduro regime has kidnapped my friend and comrade in arms, Perkins Rocha. A just, brave, intelligent, generous man and an exemplary Venezuelan. They intend to subdue us, distract us and terrify us,” Machado said in X.

For its part, the Vente Venezuela Human Rights Committee warned that Perkins Rocha was taken by force by a group of men who were not identified.

On the night of his arrest, his wife reported that officers raided their home without a warrant.

“I have been informed that our apartment has been raided without a warrant. I don’t know what they have taken and, worse still, what they may have left behind. Just like my husband,” she warned.

He asked that the results be known

Days before being arrested, the lawyer said that Nicolás Maduro “refuses to accept what all of Venezuela knows,” referring to the victory that the PUD claims its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained in the presidential elections, according to “83.5% of the minutes” that he says he collected from witnesses and table members.

On Saturday, August 24, Machado called on the international community to hold Maduro and his “criminal regime” responsible for “the repression unleashed” in the country, especially after the elections.

According to official figures, more than 2,400 people have been arrested since July 29 – some in demonstrations and others in police operations – while 25 people have died in violence in the context of post-election protests.
