One of the most frequent rumors regarding the “iPhone 15 Pro Max” is that the device to be launched this year may have a periscope lens. Another piece of information that has already been released is that, in the following year, the “iPhone 16 Pro” — that is, the smaller model — would also gain the feature, maintaining the general similarity of functions between the two top-of-the-line devices.
However, the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disputed this information today. According to him, only the largest and most advanced model — the “iPhone 16 Pro Max” (or “iPhone 16 Ultra”) — will have the camera with periscope lens. This is in line with previous information in the sense that Apple would be looking to differentiate more iPhones from each other.
In this way, Kuo also reinforced that the same will occur in the line to be launched this year, in which the “iPhone 15 Pro Max” (or “15 Ultra”) should be the only one to have the periscope lens. The market, then, would have expected this to increase demand for lenses next year, which will not materialize, according to the analyst.
With a periscope lens system, light entering the telephoto lens is reflected by a mirror tilted towards the camera’s image sensor. Changing the direction the light travels makes it possible to zoom in without losing quality. With that, optical zoom capability should increase if the rumor proves true.
All this technology demands physical space, which may not exist in the smaller model, although previous rumors have already stated that it is possible to develop a system of “folded” lenses, in order to facilitate insertion. With the rumors released today, Kuo cast doubt on that possibility.
It is worth remembering that Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung, already use this technology in the cameras of their devices, highlighting the importance of Apple bringing the novelty to the devices. It would also, as said, be a way to create more differences between Pro models, with possible repercussions on price as well.
