The Greek Hippocrates, putative father of medicine, already considered perfume as a panacea to “cure bad moods” in the 5th century BC. Since ancient times, aromatic plants have been used for their healing effects and their benefits for the mind. In every house, myrrh was burned to calm anxiety and saffron to treat sleep disorders. What was initially just a brilliant intuition was validated two thousand years later by neuroscience, confirming that smells had the capacity to modify our emotions and moods more than any other sensory experience.
