An event that occurred in the early hours of this Wednesday during the opening concert of the Katías festivities in Andes left 17 people admitted to the hospital after exposure to pepper spray. This event, which attracts both locals and tourists, coincided with the coffee harvest season in the region.
The concert, which featured artist Luis Alfonso, was going smoothly until, around 2:30 am, an attendee dispersed pepper spray into the audience. According to reports from the mayor’s office, the chemical components of the gas affected several people, which led the ESE Hospital de Andes to issue a statement about the situation.
The hospital reported that 17 people were treated in the emergency department due to pepper spray poisoning. Doctors and nursing staff managed to mitigate the symptoms triggered by the exposure.
As a result of this incident, the organizers decided to cancel Luis Alfonso’s performance. Through his social networks, the singer expressed his disappointment at not being able to finish his presentation: “We were missing three little songs, but due to the excitement of the people, things were already getting a little out of control.”
The mayor of Andes, Germán Vélez Orozco, assured CARACOL RADIO that, after the incident, the event continued with other artists who maintained the show.
In addition to pepper spray poisoning, a serious injury to the neck of a person was reported, who had to be transferred to another healthcare center due to the severity of the injury. The hospital confirmed that the patient was stabilized before being transferred for more complex care.
Finally, it was highlighted that, thanks to the yellow alert issued by the mayor’s office, there were 23 public servants available to attend to the eventuality, including 10 doctors and 8 nursing assistants.
