People with diabetes are more likely to suffer from hearing loss

  • 466 million people worldwide are affected by a “disabling” hearing loss, according to the WHO.

Hearing loss is “twice as common in people with diabetes as in those without“: this is the conclusion of theAmerican Diabetes Association regarding the link between diabetes and hearing loss.

30% higher

People with pre-diabetes are also affected: their rate of hearing loss is 30% higher than in those with normal blood sugar levels, reports the association.

Many people suffer from both pathologies at the same time and it is still unclear what is the cause. “The high blood glucose levels associated with diabetes may damage the small blood vessels in the inner ear, the same way diabetes can damage the eyes and kidneys.“, suggests the association.

4 million people

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1, which affects regarding 6% of diabetics, and type 2, which affects more than 90%. But whether it is one or the other, this chronic disease is characterized by the presence of excess sugar in the blood, hyperglycemia. In France, nearly 4 million people are affected.

Regarding hearing loss, the association advises watching for a few signs, which are more often noticed by those around you than by the affected person: frequently asking others to repeat themselves, having difficulty follow conversations involving more than two people or even need to increase the volume of the television or radio too loud.
