The Pacific tropical storm “Hilary” caused the first rivers to burst their banks in southern California with heavy rainfall. Nine people were rescued from a river bed in the city of San Diego near the border with Mexico, according to the local fire department on Twitter (X) on Sunday (local time). So there were no injuries. “The emergency services are still looking for other people who need help,” it said.

According to the authorities, two people have also been rescued from a river in Ventura County. The tropical storm, which was downgraded from a hurricane later on Sunday, hit the southwestern United States late Sunday followingnoon (local time) with torrential rain and flooding. Tropical storms are very uncommon in this region of the United States. The US weather service warned of historic amounts of precipitation that might bring “life-threatening” flash floods and flooding. People would have to be prepared for landslides and mudslides. Several schools have already been closed as a result.

According to the forecast, “Hilary” is then expected to move further north and dissolve over Nevada on Monday. The storm had previously made landfall in Mexico and, according to the media, had claimed at least two lives.

California has been repeatedly hit by extreme weather in recent months. This year, the state on the west coast of the country, which has often been plagued by dryness and drought in the past, has repeatedly been hit by heavy rainfall. On the other hand, in higher elevations in California, an unusually large amount of snow fell at the beginning of the year.
