After the former Guatemalan soccer player and current technical director of Deportivo San Pedro, of the First Division of national soccer, Julio Ariz “el Loco” Leiva was murdered this Sunday, August 18 by gunfire before the match that his team was to play in La Democracia, Huehuetenango, club leaders speak about the attack of which he was a victim.
The leadership of Deportivo San Pedro is shocked by what happened on Sunday morning, when the team was having lunch with the coaching staff, but suddenly the situation changed with the arrival of alleged public security agents who asked to speak to “El Loco” Leiva, who was killed moments later in the park of the hotel where he was staying.
Speaking to La Red Deportiva, Estuardo González, president of Deportivo San Pedro, expressed his regret at what happened and revealed some details of the crime.
“Shocked because as a board of directors we should be at a football match”; however, due to the violence that was not possible.
“Our country lends itself to crime,” said Gonzalez, who added that it could even have been hitmen who are not Guatemalan.
“We are coordinating the transfer of the players to San Pedro because they are still in Huehuetenango and we are coordinating with the San Marcos Governor’s Office to bring them back with patrol cars – from the PNC,” said the sports leader.
Regarding whether something had been said that could have triggered the attack, the leader said that they knew nothing and that “only God knows what the reason was.”
“They were at lunchtime, because they had to eat lunch at 11 in the morning, when people dressed as Guatemalan security guards asked for the technical director and asked him to leave the restaurant to ask him some questions and they killed him,” he said.
He also said that the investigations will be carried out by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), “who will be in charge through surveillance cameras because surely the van in which the criminals were traveling must have been identified.”
Regarding the transfer of the body, González said that it will be referred to the headquarters of the Guatemalan Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) in Huehuetenango, because in La Democracia, where the attack occurred, there is no headquarters of that entity.
The circumstances and details of the attack against the former footballer have not been disclosed by the authorities.
Aris Leiva worked as coach of the Deportivo San Pedro team in the second division of Guatemalan soccer.
The team under the command of Ariz Leiva was scheduled to play this afternoon against the La Democracia club in Huehuetenango, but the match was cancelled following the attack.
Ariz Leiva played for more than a decade in the top tier of Guatemalan soccer with the clubs Marquense, Xelajú, Petapa, Zacapa and Heredia, among others.
