Pension Reform: The Controversial Bonus Proposal and its Weak Incentive to Extend Your Career

Karine Lalieux (PS) brought out the pension reform file from the fridge. A new version which provides for a bonus of €22,650 for workers who agree to work three more years beyond the early retirement age. The old proposal, granting €2 per day worked, seemed less sexy but was more profitable for the (future) pensioner who might hope to receive a larger sum in the long term. Swapping three years of life without work for €22,650 is ultimately a very weak incentive to extend your career.

Karine Lalieux’s pension bonus proposal will be discussed when there is “sufficient consensus”, says Alexander De Croo

Especially since, for difficult jobs, this sum seems very ridiculous in view of the risks of seeing their health deteriorate. In addition, women have a longer life expectancy than men and would lose by opting for a fixed sum rather than an increase in the pension (by €2) depending on the number of days worked beyond the early retirement age. However, let us have no illusions, fixed bonus or not, this reform has little chance of succeeding before the deadline of July 21 set by Alexander De Croo…
