Pension below €1,200 for 1/5 pensioners with 45 years of work 2024-07-24 06:36:04

The head of the “Alliance Zara Wagenknecht” (BSW) speaks of a “political scandal” and calls for the implementation of the Austrian model.

According to the federal government’s answer to Zara Wagenknecht’s question, at the end of last month, there were approximately 1.08 million pensioners with a working time of at least 45 years, out of a total of 5.4 million, with a pension of less than 1,200 euros. The residents of the eastern states, mainly Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, are particularly affected. In the same answer it is also mentioned that the average pension after 45 years of insurance is 1,604 euros – 1,663 euros in the western states and 1,471 in the east.

“The figures show how bad the German pension system is. The fact that one in five pensioners after 45 years of work receives less than 1,200 euros is a political scandal. Germans should not put up with such low pensions, which are then heavily taxed,” said Ms Wagenknecht, who stressed that the pension would be at the center of the election campaign ahead of the 2025 federal election.

However, as the government explains, especially in western Germany, women in particular have many breaks at work, more part-time work and often lower wages. It is also emphasized that the amount of the pension cannot be used to determine the overall level of income, as many seniors have additional income or a higher-earning partner.

Ms Wagenknecht called on the government to follow the example of Austria, where the average pension for those with long-term insurance is €800 higher. “Whatever is possible there, must be possible for us as well. We need higher pensions and a brake on pension taxation,” said the BSW leader.
