Nun Arrested for Alleged Ties to Italian Mafia
A shocking twist has emerged in northern Italy as a 57-year-old nun, Sister Anna Donelli, was arrested as part of a major crackdown against the notorious ‘Ndrangheta mafia.
Authorities allege that Sister Donelli acted as a crucial link between the mafioso gang and its associates imprisoned within a penitentiary where she provided spiritual guidance. “She exploited the very spiritual role she fulfilled,” reports Italian prosecutor Francesco Prete.
Donelli was apprehended alongside 25 other individuals, suspected of various mafia-related activities, including extortion, extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering.
During the extensive operation, law enforcement officials seized €1.8 million in cash and enlisted the aid of about 300 officers and skilled special police dogs.
Sister Donelli, a member of the Sisters of Charity Institute in Milan, gained surprising recognition earlier this year for her commendable work focused on societal well-being within the prison system.
Ties with prominent figures
Adding further complexity to the case, authorities also arrested a former councilor from the Brothers of Italy, the political party leading the current government. This individual, along with another politician formerly affiliated with the government’s coalition partner, face accusations ranging from extortion and drug trafficking to tax crimes.
This wave of arrests underpins the ongoing battle waged against organized crime, highlighting the pervasive influence of the ‘Ndrangheta.
