In advance of the investigation into the emission of sulfur trioxide that occurred yesterday at the metallurgical complex in this city, Peñoles reports the following:
Derived from the identification of a small leak in a pipeline of the sulfuric acid plant, repair work was carried out to eliminate it and during the welding process, the leak increased, causing the release of sulfur trioxide and dioxide gases. , situation that we all observed yesterday.
The procedure used to repair the pipeline is the one we have used throughout the life of the operation. However, we have made the decision to modify our procedures from now on, so that this type of repair is carried out with the equipment and/or process out of operation and, in this way, ensure that an event such as the one we are unfortunately experiencing yesterday did not appear once more.
During and following the event, the concentration of sulfur dioxide was monitored in real time at the monitoring stations of the external network, located in the neighborhoods around the metallurgical complex. Due to the above, we can affirm that at no time were values higher than the limits established by the environmental authority recorded.
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) has notified us that tomorrow they will be carrying out an inspection of our facilities and we will be attentive to comply with the requirements that arise from this administrative procedure.
Communication with the corresponding authorities has been maintained at all times and we have informed them of the reestablishment of our activities, so that at this time we are already in normal operation.
We once more express our regret at this unfortunate event and offer a sincere apology for causing concern to our community.
We endorse our commitment to continue working on the sustainability of our operations and reiterate our conviction to continue promoting education, culture, sports, health, self-development and the promotion of green areas to make our beloved Comarca Lagunera a better place for to live.
