Pennsylvania Gets 5-Day Extension to Find Funding for Sharon Hospital

Pennsylvania Gets 5-Day Extension to Find Funding for Sharon Hospital

Sharon Regional Medical Center Given Five-Day Reprieve as Funding Talks Continue

In a last-minute reprieve for Sharon Regional Medical Center, a Pennsylvania court has granted a five-day extension for the commonwealth to secure funding to keep the hospital’s doors open. The agreement, reached between Steward Health Care System, the hospital’s current owner, and the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office, provides a crucial window of opportunity for negotiations to finalize a sale to Meadville Medical Center.

The extension, granted by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez, buys time for the state to find a solution to the hospital’s immediate financial needs. Stephanie Morrison, the attorney representing Steward, told the court that the commonwealth now has until 11:59 p.m. Monday, December 9, to secure the necessary funds.

While the exact amount needed remains to be determined, Morrison emphasized that progress towards a successful sale to Meadville Medical Center is essential. If the commonwealth is unable to provide the interim funding, Steward retains the flexibility to file for closure.

The agreement also expedites the objection process, shortening it from 10 days to just three, ensuring a swifter resolution to the hospital’s uncertain future. Both the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office and Meadville Medical Center have indicated they will not file objections during this critical period.

“What we really need is certainty and the ability to proceed and file a notice of closure in a timely manner if we choose to do so and if it is appropriate to do so,” Morrison stated, expressing Steward’s need for clarity. Despite the looming deadline, she emphasized Steward’s understanding that the commonwealth is actively working towards a solution.

Ray Urbanik, an attorney representing the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office, confirmed that negotiations with various entities are ongoing to secure the required funding for Sharon Regional. He highlighted the collaborative efforts with the governor’s office, state legislators, economic development agencies, and municipalities. In addition, negotiations are underway with Medical Properties Trust Inc., the owner of the hospital’s real estate, and a separate hearing is scheduled to address the validity of the property titles.

Concerns Over Timeline Raised by Lenders

While the agreement offers a glimmer of hope, concerns have been raised about the length of time it has taken to reach this stage. Michael Price, the attorney representing the FILO lenders who hold collateral on the hospital, expressed his concerns over the prolonged negotiations, which have now spanned months.

Price also pointed out that the FILO lenders have yet to be included in the negotiations, despite their significant stake in the hospital’s fate. “The FILO parties are an important piece to this puzzle, and we’re certainly not going to just walk away from our property interests,” he stated, emphasizing the need for their inclusion in discussions. He cautioned that prolonged delays only increase operating costs, further exacerbating the financial challenges.

Meanwhile, Meadville Medical Center, which is poised to acquire the troubled hospital, faced an unexpected revelation recently. Its representatives learned that the center would be responsible for some of the hospital’s debts, a commitment originally believed to be less burdensome.

A status conference is scheduled for December 20th, where updates on the funding proceedings and the sale negotiations will be presented.

With over 750 employees, weaving a vital thread into the fabric of the community, Sharon Regional Medical Center provides essential healthcare services and generates a substantial economic impact of $115 million. Its closure would reverberate throughout the region, leaving a healthcare void and a significant economic blow.
